ABC Sticks with Tradition for Fall Rollout

A couple of exceptions aside, ABC will open the 2004-05 TV season with a traditional premiere-week rollout of its schedule.

All but two of ABC's new series fall -- unscripted shows "The Benefactor" and "Wife Swap" -- will debut the week of Sept. 20, which will likely be the "official" start of the season, as measured by Nielsen. ABC also has the Emmy telecast on Sunday, Sept. 19, which it can use as a promotional platform for its new shows.

"The Benefactor," in which billionaire Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban gives away $1 million, will debut Monday, Sept. 13, prior to the first "Monday Night Football" game of the season. "Wife Swap," based on a British series in which two women trade families for a couple of weeks, gets pushed back to Wednesday, Sept. 29 to allow for a two-hour premiere of "The Bachelor" on Sept. 22.

Of note among the new shows is that "Lost," from "Alias" creator J.J. Abrams, was shot as a two-hour pilot. The network currently plans to show it in two parts, rather than as a two-hour premiere.
